The one-hour and thirty-minute interactive workshop will introduce Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) by briefly describing what it is, when it was invented, and why it was invented.
Mindfulness is becoming more mainstream in the United State due to scientific research during the past 20 years that backs up the usefulness of mindfulness in treating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, pain, insomnia, eating disorders, relationship problems, and other conditions. Publications on the topic remained less than 100 per year until 2006, but were over 2,800 in 2020. Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment by being aware of where we are and what we are doing without judgment. Participants will body scan meditation, sitting meditation, and gentle yoga. Participants will also be encouraged to engage in discussions and reflections about their personal and collective experiences during practice. It will be a time of self-reflection and self-discovery.
This class will take up to 20 participants and will repeat on October 19 to give others a chance to participate.
